The Friends have long had a goal of understanding and promoting Winter Pond as not only a wonderful recreational and wildlife resource but also one that provides countless opportunities to educate interested parties on a wide variety of topics. Members of the Friends joined with the Town of Winchester in securing a grant allowing for a complete hydrological pond study completed in 2000. The Friends have worked closely with the Town Engineer and the Conservation Commission in planning and obtaining special permits for pond care as recommended by this study.

Meetings and Presentations

Several times a year informational meetings open to the public are held at the Winchester Library. At the annual meeting in April a presentation was given on The Birds of Winter Pond highlighting the migratory patterns and habits of over 100 different species that have visited the pond. Later in the year a guest speaker reviewed the most recent Floating Island concept where installing a man made island of plantings would absorb the extra nutrients that are responsible for excessive growth on the bottom of the pond and along the shores. Previous speakers have covered the rich diversity of wildlife that call Winter Pond home including year round residents that live under the ice!

The Friends would welcome greater collaboration with local schools, scouting organizations, and other civic groups to highlight Winter Pond as an educational resource for the community.
